What Happens If You Miss a Parcel Delivery?

Expecting a package from UPS but missed their delivery attempt? This article will take you through the next steps that you can take to retrieve your package and provide some important information about the retrieval process.

Did you receive a notice at your door advising you that UPS attempted a delivery? That’s your your UPS InfoNotice, and it is your golden ticket to picking up your package. On it you will see that a delivery attempt was made as well as the InfoNotice number that is visible under the barcode. Now you have a couple of options.

  1. Reschedule your delivery. You can reschedule the delivery of your package by visiting ups.com and entering your UPS InfoNotice number in the Tracking field provided under the Quick Start menu on the home page.
  2. Pick up your item from an alternative delivery location nearby. If you received an InfoNotice, your driver would have indicated that your package has been redirected to an alternate delivery location nearby, such as The UPS Store.

If you are planning on visiting The UPS Store to pick up your package, there are some things to keep in mind. In this following section, we will answer some common questions that can help you navigate your experience better.

Q. I received an InfoNotice; when should I pick up my package?

If your UPS InfoNotice indicates that your package is available for pick up at The UPS Store, our best recommendation is to aim to pick it up the next day after receiving your notice. This will ensure that the delivery of your item is complete and that your item is ready for pick up.

Q: Do I need the InfoNotice that was left on my door to pick up my package at The UPS Store?

No, you do not need to bring the InfoNotice with you. However, you will need to bring the tracking information of your package, in addition to a valid government-issued ID. Some deliveries may also require the validation of the original delivery address.

Q. What forms of ID can be used as a government-issued ID in order to pick up my package?

When arriving at The UPS Store, you may be asked to show a government-issued ID when picking up a package. The following forms of identification are acceptable:

  • Driver’s License
  • Canadian Forces Identity Card
  • Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) card
  • Canadian or Foreign passport
  • Firearm Acquisition/Firearm Possession Card
  • Health Card with Photo (where not prohibited)
  • Permanent Residence Card
  • Provincial /Territorial Identification Card

Q. What items may be used as a secondary form of identification?

In some instances, you may be asked to show a secondary form of ID when picking up a package at The UPS Store.

The following forms are acceptable:

  • Bank Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Credit Card
  • Canadian or Foreign Passport
  • Student ID Card

Q. I am expecting a cellphone to be delivered by UPS, and have received an InfoNotice. What forms of identification will be needed to pick up that package?

When arriving at The UPS Store, you will be asked to show a government-issued ID when picking up a package. In this case, there are very specific forms of identification that are required, and no other forms of identification are acceptable. In this case, a government-issued photo ID which includes a proof of address is required. Accepted identification includes:

  • Driver’s License
    • Passport + 1 proof of address
    • Provincial Photo ID + 1 proof of address
    • Military ID card + 1 proof of address
    • Native Status Card + 1 proof of address

Also required is a second piece of identification which must contain the full name and address of the consignee. Note: Citizenship Card is not considered an acceptable form of identification for this purpose.

Q. I recently moved and don’t have an updated driver’s license or passport yet. How do I pick up my item?

You can still pick up your package, but at the time of pick up, please present a current utility bill for the new address, along with a government-issued ID with your old address.

Q. Can someone pick up my package for me?

This depends on the item(s) in your package. In the case of a cellphone pick-up, a third party (including a spouse) is not permitted to do so. For everything else, someone from your household can pick up your package for you as long as they can prove they share the same address as you and have a valid government-issued ID to present.

Q. Can I have parcels delivered to a The UPS Store location and pick them up when they arrive?

If you are expecting a package to be delivered by UPS, you can choose to have your package diverted to a The UPS Store near you for pick up. To do so, you will need to contact UPS to redirect the package.

If you receive packages regularly from a variety of couriers, you may wish to use package receiving services at The UPS Store. This would allow you to use that location’s address as your shipping address for all couriers. There is a fee for this service. Please contact your local The UPS Store for more details.
