As franchise networks grow in size or expand across borders, they inevitably become increasingly complex. To help maintain consistency and alignment, they rely on proven methods and clear lines of communication.
One way some franchisors facilitate clear communication among their franchisees is through a Franchisee Advisory Council or FAC. These councils are usually established by the franchisor, who maintains some oversight of the council’s activities and authority. Franchisee representatives are typically elected to their roles by their fellow franchisees rather than appointed by the franchisor. It’s important to know that franchise systems will vary on how they choose which of their franchisees join the FAC. For example, some franchisors may opt to directly appoint franchisees while others form an election process where some or all franchisees get a vote.
For franchisors, a Franchisee Advisory Council provides a structured forum to present new ideas and product offerings, introduce technological upgrades, or solicit feedback on existing processes and procedures. It also provides an important channel for understanding what is happening in the field at both the franchisee and customer level. For franchisees, participating in a Franchisee Advisory Council (FAC) provides an opportunity to contribute to the broader direction of the network.
Councils foster two-way communication
To help ensure consistency across the franchise experience, it’s essential that everyone is working from the same page. Franchisee Advisory Councils help establish clear lines of two-way communication between Head Office and individual franchisees. Beyond information sharing, the council can also serve as an effective forum for sharing ideas, solving problems, and discussing issues that affect the network.
An early warning system for issues and inefficiencies
In many cases, individual franchisees are the ones on the ground, doing the day-to-day work that keeps the network running. Consequently, they’re often well positioned to identify when something isn’t working as intended, needs to be modernized, or may no longer be effective. The advisory council provides franchisees with a forum to share the knowledge gained through their everyday experience, helping the overall network remain healthy and efficient.
