I received a call from a company to set up a meeting with their Marketing VP. This company supplies fitness equipment to big box stores supplying equipment to over 400 stores, each with a team of sales reps. They also have in-house agents that service these stores and scout for new vendors.
As part of their vendor relationship, every year they make a catalogue binder. The catalogue is 32 pages, 8.5” x 11’, full colour.
In the past they have three-hole punched and inserted the pages into a 1” ring binder. Printed at one of the major office store at a cost of $0.49 each copy. (At 32 pages that equals $15.68 per catalogue!) Plus each catalogue needs manual collation (labour costs). Then add to that the binder cost at $2.50 each and the front cover insert at $0.99 each
When all was said and done, the cost per binder was $20 each. Multiply that by 400 binders and his annual cost was $8,000 per year!
At the meeting I presented this company a new solution. What I suggested was to have their professional catalogue printed on 100 lb. super gloss high quality stock, full colour, 32 page with saddle stitch finish.
Not only was the paper of better quality so the pages would last longer in their stores, but the saddle stitched booklet offered a more professional and polished image than the 3 ring binders. Overall they really agreed that what I was suggesting was really a superior product.
Here’s the best part! I could provide this for them at a cost of $2.99 each. THAT IS A SAVING OF $17 EACH! They were shocked!
I received an order for 1000 catalogues that day. So not only did the VP save the company a ton of money, but they also received a better product, and can service their stores better by providing multiple copies of the catalogues!
