Helpful Printing Tips

Creating a bleed

A bleed is the area around a business card, or printed file, that is cut off during the finishing process. This is what allows colour to extend all the way to the edge of the card or print.

The bleed should extend 1/8” beyond the final trim size of the file, in all directions. This means that the size will be 1/4” bigger horizontally and vertically than the end size. For example, a business card is sized at 3.5” x 2”. The size of the card with a bleed is 3.75” x 2.25”. The guideline of 0.125” also applies to the safe zone. The safe zone is an area within the card that is 0.125” away from the cut line. This is where all text should be so that nothing gets cut off during the finishing process.

How to set this up:

Using Adobe Illustrator:
Open a new file and set the trim dimension at 3.5” x 2”.
Set the bleed at 0.125” in all directions.

Using InDesgin:
Open a new file and set the trim dimension at 3.5” x 2”.
Go to the “bleed and slug section” and set the bleed at 0.125” in all directions. If you do not see this section, you may have to open the “more options button”

Using Corel Draw
set your file at the business card size of 3.5” x 2”. Pull your ruler lines out and set them at .125” from the edge of the card. Extend all colour to these lines.

The image below gives a visual description of the bleed and safe zone. As you can see, the purple background is extended beyond the cut line.  The relevant text and image are within the safe zone. Bleed image cut off
